Education Advisers’ services are provided by six full-time, experienced consultants, aided by several associates with long and distinguished careers in education. We also work with a small number of carefully selected joint venture partners including website developers, guardians, private tutors and international consultants.
Les founded the company after having spent more than 30 years in financial services, including being General Manager of two very successful international reinsurance companies. He moved into education marketing after doing a consultancy project on the financial ramifications of private education, an area he continues to be particularly interested in. Within a short period he concluded that the internet was going to be a key factor in parental choice and decided to write and design EA’s websites, drawing on his detailed knowledge of independent schools and colleges. Les has become established as a leading expert on all aspects of private education in the UK and his views are regularly sought by the national press. Les oversees the company’s operations, particularly website design and development.
Michael has overall responsibility for school and college placements within Education Advisers. He was a founder and for over 20 years Senior Master of Hurtwood House School, a top co-educational sixth-form boarding school in the UK where he continues to act as Director of Admissions. Michael has had extensive experience in senior management roles in both the state and independent sectors. He has been a Chief Examiner with the AQA Examining Board, a member of the University of Surrey Council and has written widely on educational matters, including books on A Level choices and school organisation. He is a governor of a Surrey prep school and has organised educational conferences and worked closely with universities in promoting Higher Education seminars. Michael has considerable experience in the field of international education and has undertaken projects with Malaysia, Mauritius, Bahrain, Germany, China and Korea. Michael is also integrally involved in school marketing projects.
Mary joined Education Advisers after spending many years as a teacher and leader of Modern Languages and international programmes at a large grammar school. She is responsible for both school placements and marketing within Education Advisers and divides her time between providing bespoke advice for parents on school choice and masterminding the company’s expansion. After reading German and History at Oxford, Mary spent several years in Japan where she taught English and advised Japanese students on study abroad programmes. She has undertaken projects in Europe and Africa for schools and parents. Mary has also recently become an equity shareholder.
Duncan joined us in 2015 from one of the UK’s largest providers of private sixth form education. After graduating from Southampton University Duncan spent six years in South Korea where he taught English to children and university students. Duncan is responsible for marketing Education Advisers’ services to schools and joint venture partners as well as dealing directly with clients on school consultancy work.
Kate works with Education Advisers primarily in the area of pupil assessment, providing personalised diagnostic testing for students seeking entry to UK schools. Kate specialised in Assessment and Curriculum for her MA and has extensive experience of assessing students from across the globe in her role as Assistant Head Academic of the British International School, Shanghai.
Heather Clanfield is a fully qualified teacher and has taught in both the state and private sectors as well as being a former Director of Admissions at a state boarding school. She has an encyclopaedic knowledge of UK independent schools and many years’ experience of helping parents find the right school for their child. As well as providing school placement advice, Heather is responsible for keeping the data on our websites up to date, compiling the annual league tables and handling the company’s day to day accounts.
Ryan obtained his degree in Media & Journalism from Cardiff University. He initially joined Education Advisers to mastermind its social media activities, and is responsible for our online presence across a range of platforms. Ryan is in constant contact with schools and colleges throughout the UK and plays a key role in providing school advice to parents for children of all ages.
Joan is a qualified actuary with a long career in senior positions in financial services. She has worked for four of the largest global reinsurers – Gen Re, Munich Re, Swiss Re (M&G) and NRG Victory Re. I indeed she still acts as senior UK pricing actuary for one of them. She spent two years as a Consultant for KPMG and four years as a Director of New Vision, both management consultancies. Within EA she is responsible for finance but also masterminds the internal technology. She devised and programmed the unique EA software for school fees projections.
Tim was for 14 years Director of the International Office at Imperial College, London. During that time he gained extensive knowledge of overseas student affairs and recruitment and travelled a great deal, particularly in Europe and South East Asia. Dr Seller is the author of some 25 published papers and books on animal physiology and ecology. He initiated, organised and participated in a programme of sponsored demonstration lectures for young people. A total of 38 series of lectures were presented in Australia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand and the USA. These involved over 300 lectures and teachers’ workshops and were delivered to a total of 80,000 students. In recent years Dr Seller has worked closely with the British Council on projects in India and also with the University of Reading.
Rob has personally directed the progress of hundreds of students through GCSE, and A level to university study, in a career spanning more than thirty years. The support, guidance and mentorship Rob has always offered, first as tutor then as Head of Department, Senior Director of Studies, and, for more than a decade, Vice Principal of one of the UK’s leading tutorial colleges has been greatly appreciated by families. Rob has an extensive academic background having read Modern Languages at the Universities of Sheffield, Cardiff and at Wadham College, Oxford, where he taught French Literature.
Andy was Principal of a well known college in Oxford for 12 years. He has written extensively on A- levels in the national and local press and has spoken on school and university education at both national and international events. He has been a member of the executive body of the Council for Independent Education (the UK’s professional body for tutorial colleges), chairing the organization’s Academic Affairs Committee for several years. An examiner at both GCSE and A level, he has worked on curriculum development for English A level coursework with the OCR Awarding body. Married with a daughter, (at whose school he enjoys helping the younger children with reading and literacy), Andy read English Literature at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, and finds time to write and to lecture in Oxford, most recently on the poets Auden and Milton.
Harry holds a degree in Linguistics from Yale University and a Master’s from the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. On the UK side, he has been tutoring since 2008. In his role of Founding Director at USApplicants, Harry is concerned with the overall vision and direction of the agency. He is at his most ebullient while promoting teaching beyond the curriculum, and is constantly impressed by what students can achieve for themselves.
